The father then describes to the daughter that the potatoes, eggs, and coffee beans have each dealt with the exact same hardship: boiling water. However, they have each reacted differently. The potatoes went in strong and tough, but they became soft and weak in the boiling water. The eggs were vulnerable, however they became tough in the boiling water. The coffee beans were different. They were changed by the boiling water. They ended up being fragrant and delicious.
